The Artist Behind The Shop: Orin Drake

Today I´d like to introduce you to the interesting work of this artisan: Orin Drake.
Let´s know a bit more about her:

When did you start crafting? What was your motivation?

I've been "making things" since I can remember. It was just something that I did, as far as I know. I was always compelled! If it wasn't drawing or coloring with whatever I had on hand, it was crochet or building anything from dioramas for my dinosaurs to props for anything and everything. If I did not have it in front of me, could not find it or could not get it for Christmas, then I would make it. The same holds true now.

Which one of your designs makes you feel prouder of yourself?

I really don't think that I could possibly pick one. Everything I make is some little improvement over other things I've done, no matter how similar. That doesn't mean I'm any less proud of the things that came before either, since they were all successes in their own right. I've come a long way but there's still a ways to go, so I hope I continue to surprise myself and be proud of my work.

What kind of things inspire you?

Anything, everything. It becomes increasingly obvious that video games are a huge inspiration, but literally everything that Jim Henson has ever done is also a library of nearly unconscious knowledge that I keep finding myself rediscovering. Movies, cartoons, action figures, cosplayers and most especially music; everything I encounter and love will somehow make its way into what I do.

Do you have any favorite book, movie, comic, etc? Which one and why is it your favorite?

If I were to name favorite video games, I would go on forever. (You'll notice right away with a visit to my gallery, anyway.) The immediate favorite movie that always comes to mind if Labyrinth, of course. As for books, I'm always up for a little classic Stephen King; specifically the original four Dark Tower books. (...I don't want to talk about the rest.) I like anything that really catches me, that makes me see old things with a new tint or takes me by the hand and says, "This is dangerous. You could die, if you're not careful. But this is going to be so much fun."

Do you have any mania or obsession?

SO MANY. Again, it will be quite obvious while browsing. Aside from anything and everything shiny, certainly dragons. And video games. I´m just a shiny-loving massive geek.

Would you like to share any advice with your fellow artists?

Just keep doing what you're doing. Don't be afraid to branch out and try things and learn--but don't worry about catering to others. Do what you love and it will show in both quality and character, and eventually someone will recognize that love and just have to have something you created.

Where can people find you? (blog, twitter, flickr, facebook...)

My "other" vastly time-consuming project: http://www.orglix.org/

Anything else you´d like to share?

A mistake is only a failure if you can't figure out a way to make use of it. Force yourself to get creative, you might be surprised.
